Cancer's Power Plants

Theory: cancer might start with broken energy factories inside cells, not broken DNA.

1 Every cell has tiny power plants

These power plants are called mitochondria. They turn food into the energy a cell needs to live and work.

2 Two ways to make power

Clean way (respiration)

Uses oxygen. Healthy cells use this. Efficient, plenty of power from a little fuel.

Ancient backup (fermentation)

A leftover, very old pathway. Wasteful, burns huge amounts of sugar for little power.

Cancer cells mostly run on the wasteful backup way, even when oxygen is available. Scientists have known this for over 100 years.

This backup way isn't just wasteful. It comes bundled with an old behavior, from a time before there was any "stop" switch at all.

When a cell falls back on the ancient fuel pathway, it doesn't just lose efficiency. It reawakens the old default behavior that came with it: consume, divide, repeat, without restraint. That is what a tumor is doing.

3 Every cell also has a control center

This is called the nucleus. Inside it is DNA, the cell's instruction book: how to grow, when to divide, when to stop. The nucleus is separate from the power plants floating around it.

4 Two ideas about why cancer starts

Cancer starts when a cell's DNA (in the nucleus, the cell's control center) gets damaged mutations. Most research money follows this idea.

Cancer starts when a cell's power plants (mitochondria) break. The DNA damage shows up later, as a side effect.

This is a real, ongoing scientific debate. Thomas Seyfried, a cancer researcher at Boston College, is the leading voice for the power-plant theory.

5 The proof: swap the parts

Scientists tested this directly. They took the control center out of one cell and put it into the body of another.

Then they ran it backwards: a healthy control center, put into a cancer cell's body with damaged power plants.

Both directions point the same way: whatever drives cancer travels with the power plants, not the DNA.

6 How broken power plants could cause a tumor

Something damages a cell's power plants (smoking, chemicals, etc.)
Cell can't make enough clean energy, sends out a distress signal
Cell switches on the ancient backup, and its old no-stop mode from before oxygen existed
Backup power leaks toxic exhaust (called ROS)
Over time, that exhaust damages the DNA everyone notices later
In this view, the famous cancer mutations are downstream smoke, not the fire.

7 If true, it changes the treatment target

Love sugar (glucose). Can't run well on anything else.

Healthy cells

Can run on sugar or fat-based fuel (ketones) just fine.

Idea: cut way back on sugar and carbs so the body burns fat instead. Healthy cells adapt and keep working. The tumor, built to run on sugar, gets starved. This eating plan is called a ketogenic diet, and using it against cancer is called Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy.

8 The catch: a backup fuel

Cancer has a second fuel source: glutamine, an amino acid the body makes on its own. Diet alone can't remove it. So the strategy adds periodic drug or treatment "pulses" that block glutamine too, while the diet keeps up steady pressure ("press"). Together this is called press-pulse therapy.

9 Caveats

What the evidence shows so far

Small human studies and animal studies suggest this approach, used alongside standard treatment, may help some patients live longer and feel better.

What it is not

Not a cure. Not proven in large trials yet. Not a replacement for surgery, radiation, or chemo. Not something to attempt without a doctor.
